To Wear or Not to Wear Makeup at the Gym?

Here’s my short answer: No, you should not wear makeup to the gym. Ever.

Long answer, here’s why:

  1. The gym is a breeding ground for bacteria and clogged pores. Everyone is sweating, multiple people are touching equipments, which you are also touching, and the air plus you sweating is dying to clog your pores.

  2. Makeup and sweat combined is a recipe to clog pores. Think about the towels and equipment you’re touching, even if you wipe them down, they’re still not fully clean. Makeup gives something bacteria can cling to. When you’re working out with makeup, the sweat and sebum are produced twice as much and doesn’t fully leave your pores due to the layer of makeup on top of it. Which means, it’ll stick to your makeup, clogging your pores.

  3. You won’t break out every time you wear a full face of makeup to the gym, but it’s best to avoid it to prevent breaking out, especially for the sensitive skin types.

  4. If you must wear makeup, stick to eye makeup! It’s less likely to clog your pores, but beware, it can slide into your eyes and irritate it as you’re sweating.

Here’s what you should do instead!

1.Moisturize

Prep your face with something hydrating like Son and Park’s Beauty Water Toner or Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer. Any moisturizer you’re comfortable with will do! It won’t clog your pores or irritate you and leave your face hydrated while you’re working out.

2. Use sunscreen

If you’re working out outside, put on some sunscreen! Apply it often as sweat will wash it away, leaving your skin exposed to harmful UV rays. I recommend Neogen’s Day-Light Protection Sun Screen SPF 50/PA+++. I talk about this sunscreen all the time because it’s suited for all skin types and won’t leave a white cast. It’s also extremely moisturizing.

3. Wash your face!

After working out, double cleanse. Double cleansing guarantees that your skin will be free from sweat, sebum, and any residual makeup or clogged pores that you may have. Use an oil-based cleanser, followed by a water based one. The oil based cleanser will break up the sebum and built up debris your pores may have, the water based cleanser will remove anything else your skin is leaving behind!

If you cannot wash your face immediately afterwards, bring makeup wipes with you. This will help you remove sweat and anything thing else on your skin so you don’t break out.

Final thoughts:

Wearing makeup to the gym isn’t recommended. It’s basically a recipe for disaster. If you feel more comfortable wearing makeup, stick to eye makeup! It won’t clog your pores. Finally, keep your face hydrated and cleanse always!
